Collegiate Consulting Group

Brown University's Collegiate Consulting Group (CCG) is a student group engaging in real-world consulting. Previously, their website and central landing page was entirely hard coded in HTML, making the interface simplistic and basic. Working with my team at Fullstack@Brown, we designed and implemented a brand new content management system (CMS) based UI/UX to make website upkeep and updating seamless while redesigning the entire look of the website to be professional and credible.
The Mission
What work was cut out for me?
Design a website that:
-
Integrates a new CMS for displaying members and photos
-
Creates user flows for existing members, potential members, alumni, and potential clients
-
Modernizes and creates a sense of professionalism and cutting edge competitiveness with other consulting groups
-
Maintains the brand identity that CCG has established previously, particularly through their annual reports
Through
-
Coordinating with one fellow designer, the client, product manager, and developers
-
Prototyping and iterating using Figma
-
Compromising and revising when designs weren't feasibly implementable or unaligned with client vision

Reflections!
What did I learn and take away from this experience?

-
Collaborating across disciplines
-
I got to work with talented developers and consultants, two fields I was constantly out of depth in. However, I learned to trust my teammates with their specialties and to focus on how I could hone my own skillset to complement theirs to create a product that is greater than just the sum of our individual skills.
-
-
Communicating and working with a client
-
Rather than being given an open ended assignment, I got to work closely with the client who had both explicit wants for the website as well as open ended desires. Navigating the line between that gray area where I could use my creative judgement and where I needed to strictly adhere to client asks was dynamic and challenging.
-
-
Working with other designers
-
I learned to cooperate with another designer to work simultaneously on the same project. In order to maintain clear user flows and brand appearance across the several pages of the website, I had to work very closely with my PM and other designer to coordinate even minute design choices. Additionally, I learned to balance my own design voice with my team's and also the client's asks.
